    • "Brady Bill" - gun-control law

    • Oklahoma City bombing - retaliation against standoff in Wacco, TX. 168 killed

  • In Dec of 1998 House republicans passed two articles of impeachment against Clinton: perjury before a grand jury and obstruction of justice.
  • In 1999 the nation witnessed an impeacement in the U.S. senate for the first time in 130 years.

-Bush said that he would give the majority of the federal budget surplus of $2 trillion to the people; while Gore said he would aid the middle and lower class and use most of the surplus to aid the national debt, shor up Social Security, and expand Medicare.

-Bush was moderate and wanted America to be a "humble nation."

-BUsh victory over Gore by just 537 popular votes!!!

-it tested the American democracy but came out a peaceful victory for republicans

 

Bush Begins

  • withdrew American Support form international health programs that sanctioned abortion
  • limited government-sponsored stem cell research
  • advocated federally financed faith-based social welfare initiatives
  • repudaited the Kyoto Treaty (limit the amount of greenhouse gasses)
  • $1.3 trillion tax cut which turned budget surpluses into deficits
  • Bush's policies were so dividing that one of the members of his party switched to a democrat

 

Terrorism Comes to America (Chad)

  • On Sept. 11, 2001, America was attacked by Osama Bin Laden and the Al Qaeda. They highjacked four airliners and crashed two of them into the World Trade Center in NYC and one into the Pentagon. The fourth plane was forced to crash near Washington D.C. when the heroic passangers tried to regain control of the jet.
  • Bush responded by addresing congress just 9 days later.
  • Bush ordered a massive military campaign on Afghanistan when the Taliban refused to turn Osama over to the U.S. The U.S. quickly overthrew the taliban govt.
  • Congress passed the USA Patriot Act-permitted extensive telephone and e-mail surveillance and authorized the detention and deportation of immigrants suspected of terrorism.
